MINNEAPOLIS (WCCO) — The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers is reopening three locks in the Twin Cities to commercial traffic Thursday, but the locks will remain closed to recreational traffic.
The lock and dams on the upper and lower St. Anthony Falls and near Minnehaha Park in Minneapolis were closed to commercial traffic on June 24, when flows on the Mississippi River exceeded 40,000 cubic feet per second (cfs).
The locks and dams were closed to recreational traffic on June 22 because of unsafe conditions. They might be reopened in five to seven days.
The district is required to close the lock and dams because the high flows are unsafe for commercial boat navigation at 40,000 cfs and unsafe for recreational boat navigation at 30,000 cfs.
